Writing as a Healing Practice: Processing Tragedy

Reflecting with Chris Schumerth 13 years after the tragic event that unexpectedly linked our lives

“Wisdom tells me I am nothing. Love tells me I am everything. And between the two my life flows.”― Nisargadatta Maharaj

Dear Lovely Readers,

Today, I am grateful to share this conversation with

on Miscellaneous Sophia. Following our discussion on his Substack, This Human Experience posted on March 3rd, I had the privilege of interviewing Chris here.

In this 30-minute episode, Chris and I reference the tragic event that unexpectedly connected our lives thirteen years ago. We discuss how writing became a bridge between us, and delve into our individual creative processes. The conversation reveals how writing has served as a healing tool, helping us process difficult emotions in healthier ways.

We examine the profound nature of human experience, distinguishing between thoughtful responses versus reactive behaviors. Our discussion also touches on reframing discipline as devotion, and we share insights about our current writing projects.

This insightful conversation offers a window into how tragedy can evolve into connection, growth, and understanding. You can watch the video or listen to the audio directly on the Substack app.

As always, I hope that you take what serves you and leave what doesn’t. 💗

with love,

Sophia

P.S. If you’d like to read some further thoughts on this 3/6/12 anniversary, including some poetry of mine, please see this post from two years ago.

Today is an 11-year anniversary of an unfortunate event that took place at my high school. I honestly didn’t think I would have a chance to even write about it today, but here I am at almost 11pm at night, and I want to churn something out.
