The story of my LLC
I have exciting news. As referenced in my last post, I am starting new work. As of last week, I am now a business owner!
This is so exciting for me. I now run my own LLC: Laettner Joubert Writing and Consulting.
Last week, H and I were on our way to Savannah to visit his family because he was filming a movie with his friends who are amateur filmmakers. In this motor cycle action short for the film, he played the bad-boy-motorcyclist. I don’t know if any role can surpass when he acted as an extra-terrestrial spy who couldn’t speak English in their very funny black and white sci-fi movie, but I look forward to seeing this one anyways!
On our way to travel, I worked on my LLC filing with the State of New Jersey. When all was completed, I shrieked with joy. I am so happy about this new chapter of working for myself because it is a change that I have felt calling to me for some time now, and the right circumstances came about to give me the push I needed to make this change.
For the last three years, I worked for a grant management and consultant company. I started out working with clients and had a good experience there supporting client grant applications, with a focus on grants for workforce development, economic resilience, and scientific research. In my last year with the company, the leadership identified my skills in research, organization, and technical editing as fitting for internal operations support, so my role shifted from Funding Strategist (Grant Project Manager) to Grants Research and Operations Specialist.
I am so passionate about this work and so happy to have worked with the company that I worked with. They are still doing wonderful and diligent work to help underserved communities and organizations receive federal and state funding for much-needed economic development, technology, broadband, and infrastructure projects.
At the same time, these last few years I did have a goal in mind of working for myself and shifting more of my time to my writing career. So, when the company I worked for this summer had to downsize, I had an unexpected but welcome push from fate to take a leap of faith and work for myself.
The most wonderful part about all this is that I stopped working full time in June - during that whirlwind wedding month. I was honestly relieved to have more of my time freed up, because the wedding came around quick!
Pivoting to working for myself in establishing my LLC has allowed me to be more choosy with how I spend my time writing, as I can take on client contracts in proportion to my other writing goals. I am working on a manuscript of short stories and will begin sharing some of those here next month. :) (Exciting!)
All that to say, I believe this change is divinely aligned.
I am so happy to now be working for myself, while still doing similar work that I strongly believe creates a positive impact. I love that I get to use my skills as a writer and researcher to help organizations achieve their operational goals, receive funding in areas where there is lack, and help move the needle to a more equitable state for underserved populations. This is important work.
On another note, this LLC structure allows me to pursue non-grant writing and editing services for clients. I can use my skills as a writer and editor to support an organization’s or an individual’s written communications. I am interested in supporting practically any form of writing that seeks publication, save of course the obvious things I don’t agree with such as hate speech. I look forward to this broadening of my contract portfolio because it will allow me to hone my editing skills in various publication sectors.
I have already begun negotiating contracts with some client organizations in various fields and I have a special package rate for Non Profit Organizations.
I am also open to working with individuals, whether it be individuals seeking small business innovation grants or individuals seeking publication, and the like. Even if you have, for example, a student that needs help on an essay or application, feel free to email me and I will respond with my rates :)
I love writing
Those that know me know that I have been writing since I was a young girl. I have a kept personal journal since I was 10 years old.
I love writing. I love editing. I love refining. I enjoy the full process and I am so glad that I get to hone this skill further in this new phase of my work.
